Once upon a time there was a small village at the foot of the mountains in Karnataka, where the cowherd Kalinga lived with his herd.
Of all his cows, Punyakoti was the gentlest, and everyone in the village knew that she never lied.
Only recently she had given birth to a calf that followed her everywhere.
Every morning Kalinga drove the cows to a pasture at the edge of the forest, where the grass was especially juicy.
What nobody suspected: a hungry tiger had hidden in a cave close by.
His name was Arbhuta and he hadn't found any prey for days.
When Punyakoti moved a little away from the herd, the tiger leapt out of his hiding place and blocked her way.
Punyakoti trembled, but instead of fleeing, she asked him for a single favour.
At home my calf is waiting; it can't live without my milk. Let me go to it one last time, then I will return to you.”
The tiger took it for an excuse, but something in her voice made him let her go.
