Privacy policy
This page explains what DeutschKatha knows about you, where it is kept, and how you can see or delete it. We collect as little as we can.
Who we are
DeutschKatha is a website with easy German stories for learners in India. It is run by DeutschKatha. Write to us at support@deutschkatha.com about anything on this page.
If you just read, without signing in
You can read DeutschKatha without an account. Your reading progress, saved words, quiz results, streak, settings and the texts you add under “My stories” are kept only in your own browser (in its local storage). They are not sent to us. If you clear your browser data or use another device, they are gone.
Two things can reach us without an account:
- Error reports. If something on a page breaks, your browser sends us the error message, the page it happened on and your device type (for example “phone · Android”). There is no name or email in it. We keep error reports for 60 days.
- Feedback. If you use “Send feedback”, we keep your message, the page you were on, your device type and, if you give it, your email address, so that we can answer.
To show you the website, some companies handle your connection:
- GitHub (GitHub, Inc.) hosts the website. Like every web host, it sees your IP address and may keep it in its logs for security.
- Google Fonts provides the fonts the pages use. Your browser downloads them from Google, which sees your IP address.
We do not use analytics, tracking pixels or advertising cookies.
If you sign in with Google
Signing in keeps your Premium on every device. When you choose “Sign in with Google”, Google tells us your name, your email address and an account ID, after it has checked that the email address is really yours. We never see your Google password.
We keep:
- your name, email address and Google account ID
- the date you first signed in and the date of your latest visit
- whether you have Premium, until which day, and how you got it (for example a gift from us, a payment or a friend invite), with a history of these changes
- how you first found DeutschKatha (for example a Google search, a WhatsApp link or a friend's invite: the website you came from and the first page you opened) and your device type (for example “phone · Android”)
- what you do on DeutschKatha while you are signed in, each with the time: the chapters you open and finish, your quiz scores and level check result, the recordings you play, the words you save, the pages you open, when you reach a Premium lock, how often you use AI help, and when you send us feedback. We use this to make the stories and the website better, for example to see where readers stop reading. We delete these records after 90 days
- the days on which you opened a chapter, for friend invites
- your invite code and, if you joined through a friend's invite link, who invited you. That friend sees only your first name and on how many days you have read, nothing else
This is stored in a database on Cloudflare (Cloudflare, Inc.), in its Asia-Pacific region, and our server runs on Cloudflare too. Cloudflare sees your IP address when your browser talks to our server. Your browser keeps a sign-in key for 60 days so that you stay signed in; “Sign out” removes it.
Your reading progress, saved words and settings themselves stay in your browser even when you are signed in; the server keeps only the activity record above. Nothing is recorded before you sign in, and nothing after you sign out.
AI help
Some Premium tools (explaining your own texts under “My stories”, checking a story you send to the library) use AI. When you use them, the text goes through our server to Anthropic (the company behind Claude) to be translated or checked. We do not store these texts on our server.
Payments and ads (not active yet)
Payments and ads are not switched on yet. When they are, payments will be handled by a payment company (we will not see or keep your card or UPI details), and free readers may see ads from Google. We will update this page and tell you before either starts.
Why we use your data
Only to run DeutschKatha for you: to sign you in, to know whether you have Premium, to answer your messages, to find and fix problems, to make the stories and the website better, and to keep the service safe. Only the DeutschKatha team sees this data. We do not sell your data, and we do not use it for advertising.
Your rights
Under India’s Digital Personal Data Protection Act, 2023, you can ask us to:
- tell you what we keep about you
- correct it
- delete your account and everything we keep about you
- name someone to act for you if you cannot
Write to privacy@deutschkatha.com from the email address of your account. We answer within 30 days. If you have Premium that you paid for, we keep the payment records the law asks us to keep, even after deleting your account.
Grievance officer: the DeutschKatha team, privacy@deutschkatha.com. If you are not happy with our answer, you can complain to the Data Protection Board of India.
Children
DeutschKatha is meant for adults. If you are under 18, please use it only with the permission of a parent or guardian, and ask them before you sign in. We do not knowingly keep an account of a child without that permission; a parent can write to us and we will delete it.
Data outside India
GitHub, Google, Cloudflare and Anthropic may handle data on servers outside India. They are large companies with their own security and privacy rules.
Changes
When we change this policy, we change the date below. For a big change, we tell signed-in readers on the website first.
