Kapitel 1: Eine fremde Knolle
Im 18. Jahrhundert hatten die Menschen in Preußen oft Hunger.In the 18th century the people of Prussia were often hungry.
Wenn das Wetter schlecht war, gab es nicht genug Getreide für Brot.When the weather was bad, there wasn’t enough grain for bread.
König Friedrich der Zweite suchte deshalb eine Lösung.So King Frederick the Second looked for a solution.
Er kannte eine Pflanze aus Amerika: die Kartoffel.He knew of a plant from America: the potato.
Sie wuchs auch auf schlechtem Boden und machte viele Menschen satt.It grew even in poor soil and filled many stomachs.
Doch die Bauern wollten sie nicht essen.But the farmers didn’t want to eat it.
„Das Ding schmeckt nach nichts, und nicht einmal die Hunde fressen es“, sagten sie.“The thing tastes of nothing, and not even the dogs eat it,” they said.
Im Jahr 1756 schrieb der König deshalb einen Befehl: Alle sollten Kartoffeln anbauen.So in 1756 the king wrote an order: everyone was to grow potatoes.
Dieser Brief heißt heute der „Kartoffelbefehl“.Today this letter is called the “potato order”.
