Die Bremer Stadtmusikanten

Es war einmal ein Esel.Once upon a time there was a donkey.

Viele Jahre lang hatte er schwere Säcke zur Mühle getragen.For many years he had carried heavy sacks to the mill.

Jetzt war er alt und müde, und sein Herr wollte ihn nicht mehr füttern.Now he was old and tired, and his master didn't want to feed him any more.

Da lief der Esel fort.So the donkey ran away.

„Ich gehe nach Bremen“, dachte er. „Dort werde ich Stadtmusikant!““I'll go to Bremen,” he thought. “There I'll become a town musician!”

Auf dem Weg traf er einen Hund, der müde am Straßenrand lag.On the way he met a dog that was lying tired by the roadside.

„Ich bin zu alt für die Jagd“, sagte der Hund traurig.“I'm too old for hunting,” the dog said sadly.

„Komm mit nach Bremen!“, rief der Esel. „Ich spiele die Laute, und du schlägst die Pauke.““Come with me to Bremen!” cried the donkey. “I'll play the lute, and you'll beat the drum.”

Bald trafen sie eine Katze mit einem traurigen Gesicht und einen Hahn, der laut auf einem Tor krähte.Soon they met a cat with a sad face and a rooster that was crowing loudly on a gate.

Auch sie waren alt, und auch sie kamen mit.They were old too, and they came along too.
