Würzburg, 8 November 1895: in a darkened lab, a screen starts to glow for no reason. Seven weeks later a professor can see through his wife's hand, and medicine is changed for ever.

Kapitel 1: Ein Leuchten im Dunkeln

A glow in the dark · about 243 words · each German sentence with its English translation

On the evening of 8 November 1895, Wilhelm Conrad Röntgen, professor of physics at the University of Würzburg, was working alone in his laboratory, as he so often did.

He was studying cathode rays, a much-discussed phenomenon at the time, which appears when a high electrical voltage is applied to a glass tube that has almost no air left in it.

To be able to observe the tube's faint glow better, he had wrapped it in black cardboard and made the room completely dark.

When he switched on the current, he noticed something strange: a screen coated with barium platinocyanide, lying on the table some distance away, began to glow green.

It could not be cathode rays, because they only travel a few centimetres in air, and the cardboard would have stopped them anyway.

Evidently an unknown radiation was coming from the tube that passed through the cardboard with ease.

Röntgen tat, was ein sorgfältiger Experimentalphysiker tut: Er zweifelte zunächst an seinen eigenen Beobachtungen und versuchte, sie zu widerlegen.Röntgen did what a careful experimental physicist does: first he doubted his own observations and tried to disprove them.

He held paper, a thick book, wooden boards and metal plates between the tube and the screen, and found that the rays passed more or less easily through most materials.

Nur Blei hielt sie nahezu vollständig auf.Only lead stopped them almost completely.

When he held a small piece of lead between his fingers, he saw on the screen not only its shadow but also the outlines of the bones of his own fingers.

For the new radiation, whose nature he did not know, he chose the name that mathematicians give to an unknown quantity: X-rays.

Im Englischen heißen sie bis heute „X-rays“, im Deutschen dagegen sagt man meist „Röntgenstrahlen“.In English they are still called “X-rays” today, whereas in German people usually say “Röntgenstrahlen”.
