Kapitel 1: Die erste Nacht

The first night · about 225 words · each German sentence with its English translation

Anjali Menon studied medicine in Kochi and worked there in a hospital for two years before she came to Germany.

To be allowed to work as a doctor here, she had to pass the medical language exam and take the knowledge test, which establishes whether her knowledge matches that of a German medical degree.

She has had her licence to practise for a month, and now she works as a junior doctor in internal medicine at a large hospital in Cologne.

Tonight she is on night duty in the emergency department for the first time.

At ten in the evening she takes over from her colleague the patients who are still waiting for results.

The handover is brief and full of abbreviations: “Bed three, dehydration, getting a drip; bed five, suspected pneumonia, chest X-ray still pending.”

Anjali schreibt mit und fragt zweimal nach.Anjali takes notes and asks twice for more detail.

Der Oberarzt ist die ganze Nacht erreichbar.“Her colleague smiles: “Better to ask once too often than once too rarely. The senior physician can be reached all night.”

In German emergency departments every patient is first assessed by a nurse on arrival.

Many hospitals use the Manchester Triage System for this, which gives every patient one of five colours depending on urgency, from red for immediately to blue for not urgent.

Wer „Grün“ bekommt, wartet in einer vollen Nacht durchaus mehrere Stunden; wer „Rot“ bekommt, wird sofort behandelt.Anyone given “green” may well wait several hours on a busy night; anyone given “red” is treated immediately.

Many patients don't understand why someone who arrived later is seen before them, and sometimes Anjali has to explain it patiently.
