The fast hare laughs at the hedgehog's short legs. So the hedgehog challenges him to a race, with a clever plan.

Kapitel 1: Die Wette
Es ist ein schöner Sonntagmorgen.It is a lovely Sunday morning.
Der Igel steht vor seinem Haus und singt ein Lied.The hedgehog stands in front of his house and sings a song.
Dann geht er auf das Feld und schaut nach seinen Rüben.Then he goes to the field to look at his turnips.
Dort trifft er den Hasen.There he meets the hare.
Der Hase lacht über den Igel: „Deine Beine sind so kurz und krumm!“The hare laughs at the hedgehog: “Your legs are so short and crooked!”
Der Igel ärgert sich. „Ich bin schneller als du!“, sagt er.The hedgehog gets annoyed. “I'm faster than you!” he says.
„Das glaube ich nicht“, sagt der Hase. „Wir machen ein Rennen!““I don't believe that,” says the hare. “Let's have a race!”
Sie wetten um einen Goldtaler.They bet a gold coin.
Der Igel geht zuerst nach Hause.The hedgehog goes home first.
Er sagt zu seiner Frau: „Komm mit aufs Feld! Ich habe eine Idee.“He says to his wife: “Come with me to the field! I have an idea.”
Seine Frau sieht genauso aus wie er.His wife looks exactly like him.
Sie stellt sich unten an das Ende vom Feld.She stands at the bottom end of the field.
