Commands: the imperative
Imperativ
Komm! Kommt! Kommen Sie! Orders, requests and advice.
Use the imperative for orders, requests, advice and instructions. There are three forms: for du, ihr and Sie. Add bitte to be polite.
The three forms
| verb | du | ihr | Sie |
|---|---|---|---|
| kommen | Komm! | Kommt! | Kommen Sie! |
| warten | Warte! | Wartet! | Warten Sie! |
| nehmen | Nimm! | Nehmt! | Nehmen Sie! |
| geben | Gib! | Gebt! | Geben Sie! |
| fahren | Fahr! | Fahrt! | Fahren Sie! |
| aufmachen | Mach auf! | Macht auf! | Machen Sie auf! |
| sein | Sei! | Seid! | Seien Sie! |
| haben | Hab! | Habt! | Haben Sie! |
- du form: the du verb without -st and without du: du kommst → Komm! Verbs with e → i keep the i (Nimm! Gib!), but a → ä loses the umlaut (Fahr!).
- Stems ending in -t or -d keep an -e: Warte! Finde!
- ihr form: the normal ihr verb without ihr: Kommt! The Sie form keeps Sie after the verb.
