Quiet hours: nights and Sundays
Ruhezeiten
Night rest from 22:00 to 6:00 and all of Sunday are quiet times in German homes; loud noise can be fined.
The rule
Night rest (Nachtruhe) is from 22:00 to 6:00 almost everywhere. Keep music, TV and voices at a level your neighbours cannot hear.
Sundays and public holidays are quiet all day: no drilling, no hammering, no lawn mowing, no loud music.
Many houses also have a quiet time at lunch (often 13:00 to 15:00). This comes from your house rules (Hausordnung), so read them.
A party is fine if you tell your neighbours, but the night rest still applies after 22:00. "We told everyone" is not a permission to be loud all night.
Neighbours in Germany often complain directly, leave a note, or call the landlord or the police. Repeated noise can even be a reason for the landlord to end your contract.
What it costs
| If you… | Fine or cost |
|---|---|
| Unnecessary loud noise that disturbs others | up to €5,000 (state and city rules decide the details) |
India vs Germany
In India, weddings, festivals and construction are loud at all hours and nobody minds. In Germany, a loud party after 22:00 or drilling on a Sunday is one of the most common reasons for trouble with neighbours.
German words for this
